| LEGAL CAREERNo wonder law school applications jumped substantially when "L.A. Law" became a popular television series, and they jumped again when "Ally McBeal' went on the air. Of course, reports that starting salaries for some new lawyers are now close to $150,000 annually, and that the partners at many major American law firms are millionaires can only add to the allure of the profession. On the other hand, the apparent failure of justice in highly publicized trials has generated a fair amount of skepticism about the contemporary practice of law. But most aspiring law students continue to be attracted to the profession by the prospect of using their legal skills to help bring about positive social change. Perhaps the disparity between the image of the American lawyer in popular culture and the reality of law practice contributes to a disproportionate number of attorneys being dissatisfied with their professional careers. Obviously, lawyers play a crucial role in America, and the rewards can be substantial, but there is a wide range in the type of work that lawyers do and much of it does not come close to matching the sexy glamour of a popular television series or legal thriller. The many who begin law school with aspirations to do public interest work often find too few jobs available or the financial implications of accepting one too dire. Those few who graduate at the top of their class from the best law schools may command high-paying positions at large law firms, but may often find that the hours are long and that much of the work is drudgery. Working sixty hours a week as a young associate, with no guarantee of ever making partner, is not uncommon. The vast majority of new lawyers struggle to make it in an increasingly competitive market. Further, it may be difficult to disassociate from the substantial client problems lawyers deal with on a daily basis. Additionally, a seeming backlash against lawyers among the general public, represented by a steady flow of lawyer jokes and acts of violence against attorneys, detracts from the glamour of the profession. Nevertheless, opportunities for the twenty-first-century American lawyer are better than ever before, as they continue to play an essential role in the shaping of policy in an ever-more interconnected, highly technical, and international society. Fortunately, contemporary American legal education is stronger and better than ever, and it deservedly attracts the best students and prepares them for careers in law and beyond, While American law schools have changed to become more akin to graduate schools, at the same time they have distanced themselves from those who actually practice law. The crossover between practitioners and teachers of the law has become less common. Full-time law faculty members often spend no time practicing law, but more typically begin their teaching careers shortly after graduating from law school and spending one or two years clerking for an appellate court. Further, as the courses taught in law school have focused more on the rules and philosophy behind the law, some have complained that law schools are not focusing sufficiently on the practical skills needed for practicing law. This criticism comes at the same time that the larger law firms have cut back the time spent mentoring newly hired associates. In an effort to fill the gap, most law schools have developed clinical programs, which through a combination of simulated and real hands-on legal experience give law students an opportunity to learn some of the skills they will need in practice. Additionally, bar associations offer special practice-oriented educational programs and workshops for newer and more seasoned attorneys seeking to develop their skills in specific areas. The legal academy sees its primary role as one of preparing aspiring lawyers for a lifetime of learning the law, and to this end most would agree they do a first-rate job.
