ELIAN GONZALES

How can anyone not be affected by the tragedy of a young child witnessing the death of a parent? In late 1999, America's debate over the issue of refugees from Communist Cuba was brought into the media spotlight when a six-year-old boy, Elian Gonzalez, was rescued from the waters of the Atlantic with two adults on November 25. Elian and his mother, along with twelve other Cubans, had attempted to defect to the United States by sailing to Florida. In a tragic turn of events, the boat capsized and ten people died, including Elians mother Elisabet. Elian was sent to live temporarily in Miami with Lazaro Gonzales, his great-uncle.

Americans began to argue heatedly about how to resolve Elan's situation. Should he be returned to the custody of his father, who still lived in Cuba? Or should he be allowed to defect and continue to live with his relatives in Miami? While Cubans demanded that Elian be returned to his father, Cuban-Americans argued that Elian's mother had sacrificed her life so Elian could grow up in America. Politicians also joined the debate, both political parties sensitive to the concerns of Cuban-Americans living in Florida, a key state with regard to many issues, and particularly so in light of the upcoming presidential election.

In January 2000, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) ruled that Elian should be returned to his father in Cuba. The Miami relatives disagreed and filed a federal lawsuit, which dragged out the decision for several more months. In the meantime, on April 6, Juan Miguel Gonzalez came to the United States to be reunited with his son, which proved to be more difficult than he had anticipated. The Miami relatives refused Attorney General Janet Reno's request to relinquish custody of Elian. Father and son were reunited only after armed federal agents raided the home where Elian was being held. Television and print media provided extensive coverage of the raid, and the subsequent protests in Miami.

After being reunited with his father, Elian lived in the Washington, DC., area until his fate could be decided by the legal system. On June 23, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals denied the Miami relatives' petition for an amnesty hearing, and the United States Supreme Court refused to intervene. Elian and his father left for Cuba on June 29, where their arrival was celebrated by eight hundred school children and a military marching band.

Many questions remain: To what extent did the widespread media coverage influence the outcome of this case? How much was the public really concerned with Elian, and to what degree did they use his situation to voice their political differences? Would this young boy have had to feel the fear of being dragged out of his Miami home by armed men if the media had not been so involved? These are questions that a responsible media must answer. Our rapidly expanding technology allows us to know what happens in the world around us almost instantly, and while knowledge does improve our lives, it is the media that chooses what we see and hear, and as such must realize the enormous responsibility that comes with its position.
