| KEVORKIANApart from the Buttafuocos and Bobbins of the world, the media does focus on serious issues that deserve the public's thoughtful attention. Dr. Jack Kevorkian's name became newsworthy during the 1990s for his role in assisting terminally ill people to commit suicide. In June 1990, Kevorkian presided over his first assisted suicide in his old Volkswagen van. Janet Adkins, a vibrant woman who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, traveled to Michigan where Kevorkian lived, and where there was no law prohibiting assisted suicide. Adkins's death prompted a national debate about the ethics of assisted suicide, which was a featured topic in Op-Ed pages, and on television talk shows. Despite a judicial ruling forbidding the use of his assisted-suicide machine, Kevorkian presided at two more assisted suicides in February 1991. In response, Michigan suspended his license to practice medicine, and Kevorkian was indicted on two charges of murder. In July, however, the indictment was dismissed because Judge David Breck ruled that Kevorkian had not committed murder, and that assisting at a suicide was not illegal. After two more assisted suicides, the Michigan legislature rapidly attempted to devise a law that would stop Kevorkian. They passed a fifteen-month ban on assisted suicide in order to allow a commission to study the issue further. Before the ban took effect, Kevorkian assisted at eight more suicides. Media attention and debate grew increasingly intense. Soon after the fifteen-month ban was found to be unconstitutional for technical reasons, Kevorkian continued to assist suicides. By the year 2000, he had attended at over 120. In 1998, Kevorkian attracted even more media attention when "60 Minutes" broadcast a videotape of Kevorkian actually delivering a lethal injection to a terminally ill person. Critics accused "60 Minutes" of airing the video to increase ratings, but the show defended their choice, stating their broadcast had sparked an important national discussion about euthanasia. Kevorkian was arrested and faced trial for murder in early 1999. In April 1999, he was convicted and sentenced to ten to twenty-five years in prison. Judge Jessica Cooper believed the trial was not about the issue of euthanasia, but, rather, she felt the crucial issue was Kevorkian's lack of respect for the legal system. She told Kevorkian after his sentencing, "You had the audacity to go on national television, show the world what you did and dare the legal system to stop you. Well, sir, consider yourself stopped."
