| LEOPOLD LOEB TRIALOn the afternoon of May 24, 1924, multi-millionaire Jacob Franks, who lived in Chicago, received some terrifying news. His young son Bobby had been kidnapped, and the kidnappers were demanding a ransom of ten thousand dollars. Franks was preparing to deliver the money when a street crew worker discovered Bobbys body in a culvert. Police investigators soon found a crucial piece of evidence next to the body: a pair of glasses in a frame that belonged to only three people in the whole city of Chicago. That evidence led police to Nathan Leopold, and then to his friend, Richard Loeb. This case gained attention in the media as the gruesome details about Bobby Franks's death were revealed. Leopold and Loeb had lured him into their car, and then clubbed him to death with a chisel. Next, they burned his body with hydrochloric acid to prevent identification. The case attracted even more attention when famous attorney Clarence Darrow was hired to defend Leopold and Loeb. Surprisingly, given his considerable skills as a trial attorney, Darrow elected to have his clients plead guilty to murder and kidnapping for ransom, both of which carried the death penalty. Darrow then asked the judge to spare their lives, expressing his intense opposition to the death penalty. Darrow's closing statement, which was heavily covered in the media, lasted twelve hours and is memorable for its dramatic eloquence. Five thousand people waited in the street for the verdict to be read. Darrow's argument prevailed, and the judge sentenced both men to life in prison. While serving his sentence, Loeb was stabbed to death in a prison shower in 1936. Leopold was paroled in 1958 and moved to Puerto Rico, where he lived until the age of sixty-six. The media called Leopold and Loeb's case the "crime of the century" not only because of the prominence of the victims family, but also because Americans could not understand why two intelligent young men—Loeb graduated from the University of Michigan at seventeen, and Leopold from the University of Chicago at eighteen— would commit such a terrible crime. Historians have labelled Leopold and Loeb monsters, or portrayed them as victims of a poor upbringing, while others have argued that Leopold and Loeb killed solely for the excitement and the challenge of committing the perfect crime.
