| PATTY HEARSTIn the turbulent years of the early 1970s, the media covered another legal drama, which had all the elements of an action movie—the wealthy heiress who is kidnapped and held for ransom, is eventually imprisoned herself, ultimately released, and ends up living in the suburbs. But this was not a story—it was fact, and the media reported on it almost daily. The public could tune in any time for an update on a case that had everyone wondering what one of the richest young women in America was really up to. It all began when a politically radical group named the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) decided to make a name for themselves by kidnapping Patty Hearst, daughter of the well-known publishing mogul. On February 4, 1974, Hearst was dragged from her Berkeley, California, apartment by the SLA and kept in a closet for two months. Soon after her abduction, the SLA began issuing demands, namely that Randolph Hearst give millions of dollars to feed the poor. Each communique from the SLA was printed, as per their instructions, in its entirety in national newspapers, contributing to the intense media interest in Hearst's situation. Although their initial demands were met, the SLA did not release Hearst. Instead, much to everyone's surprise, Patty issued a statement that she had chosen to stay with the SLA and join their fight. Soon, Hearst, who had changed her name to Tania, became a wanted criminal for her participation in an armed robbery, but she evaded capture for months. The FBI finally located Hearst and arrested her, and the trial began two years after her kidnapping. Hearst, who was defended by famed attorney F. Lee Bailey claimed she had been coerced into committing the robbery and that during the entire nineteen months she spent with the SLA, she was living "under duress." The press coverage of the trial was extensive, with both national and international media in attendance. The jury did not believe Hearst, and they sentenced her to seven years in prison, but she was released after two years when President Carter commuted her sentence in 1079. In January 2001, President Clinton issued her a presidential pardon. Even today it is still unclear whether Hearst participated in criminal activity because she truly believed in the SLA's goals, or whether she was experiencing residual trauma from her captivity.
