| SCOPE MONKEY TRIALLess than a year after the media covered the drama of the Leopold and Loeb case, a trial of a different nature stormed onto the scene. The Scopes "Monkey Trial" became a media sensation because it addressed a controversial issue and sparked intense public debate. In March 1925, a group of city officials in Dayton, Tennessee, spotted an advertisement placed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) seeking a teacher to act as a test case for the Butler Act, a Tennessee law that made it illegal to teach evolution in public schools. The town officials hoped that hosting such a trial would make Dayton famous. They approached a local biology teacher named John Scopes, who agreed to participate. Media interest in the Scopes trial grew rapidly when William Jennings Bryan, popular fundamentalist Christian speaker and former presidential candidate, offered to assist the prosecution. Clarence Darrow, who had recently finished his arguments in the widely publicized Leopold and Loeb case, offered to defend Scopes for free. Darrow's interest in the case was motivated by his belief that the Butler law challenged individual and reliaious freedom. Even before the first gavel, the stage was set for a media extravaganza. The trial began on July 10, 1925, with more than one thousand spectators in attendance, including many journalists. Microphones were used in the courtroom to broadcast the trial over the radio. For the first time in history Americans could follow a trial as it happened. The defense hoped to argue for the validity of Darwin's theory of evolution, but Judge Raulston ruled that the jury should only debate whether Scopes had, in fact, taught evolution. Darrow began his defense by admitting that Scopes had violated the law. From there, he hoped to argue that teaching evolution did not directly contradict creation, that the two ideas could co-exist. The judge undercut that strategy when he ruled that Darrow could not call scientific experts to testify. So Darrow shifted his course and, in a surprise move, called William Jennings Bryan to the stand. Darrow wanted Bryan to testify about his belief in the literal interpretation of the Bible. Bryan became flustered during Darrow's relentless questioning, and Judge Raulston had to step in and halt the proceedings. In the end, Darrow requested that the jury find Scopes guilty so the case could go forward in an appeal. Five days after the conclusion of the trial, Bryan died of a heart attack—some suggested he died of a broken heart after witnessing the attack on his cherished belief in the literal interpretation of the Bible. In 1926, the Tennessee Supreme Court heard the Scopes case and overturned the verdict on technical grounds, but it was not until 1967 that the Butler Act was repealed. The Scopes trial was generated for the sole purpose of attracting media attention to the issue of teaching evolution Dayton's town officials also participated in a public relation' move for their town. Thus began a trend that continues todd with the media treating trials as newsworthy events, and ever broadcasting gavel-to-gavel coverage of the proceedings as they happen.
