| TIMOTHY McVEIGHAmericans were riveted to their televisions as the events of April 19, 1995, unfolded. Early reports indicated that an extremely powerful bomb had exploded in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The media rapidly broadcast pictures of the devastation caused by an explosion that claimed 168 lives, including nineteen children. As the news unfolded, it became clear that the bomb had been detonated in front of the building, directly below a day-care center. Federal investigators immediately began their search for the perpetrators. A vehicle identification number on the Ryder truck used in the bombing pointed officials to the truck rental office, where paperwork eventually led them to a man named Timothy McVeigh. McVeigh was arrested and the nation's attention turned to the upcoming trial—what would McVeigh be charged with? Who would prosecute and defend him? Would he be sentenced to die for the act of terrorism he committed? What was his motivation? Justice Department officials and lead prosecutor Joseph Hartzler elected to charge McVeigh with eleven crimes, all of which carried the possibility of a death sentence, including use of a weapon of mass destruction and the murder of federal law-enforcement agents. From the beginning, Stephen Jones, McVeigh's defense attorney, attempted to use the media to sway public opinion about his client, arranging frequent public appearances to help build a more positive image of his client, thereby making it less likely that McVeigh would be executed. Jones's strategy followed that used in the 0. J. Simpson trial, in which the defense attorneys intentionally kept a high profile in the media in the hope of influencing public opinion. Opening statements in the trial, which was held in Denver, began on April 24, 1997. Hartzler presented an efficient and nearly flawless prosecution, calling witnesses who established that McVeigh planned the bombing, and rented the Ryder truck. The case was not airtight, since there were no witnesses who saw McVeigh make the bomb, nor was he placed at the scene of the bombing. The defense, which trial observers described as ineffective, did not capitalize on these weaknesses, and instead attempted to justify McVeigh's actions due to his anti-government political beliefs. In June, McVeigh was convicted on all eleven counts, and sentenced to die by lethal injection. Although the bombing in Oklahoma City will be remembered as a horrible example of domestic terrorism, trial observers noted that Americans could take comfort in the resolution of the trial. In this case, the judicial system functioned as it was intended, featuring a tough but fair judge, and well-prepared attorneys. And despite a high level of media interest, justice was not side-tracked by a media circus. In early 2001, the media was, however, brought back to the case, this time as a potential participant. McVeigh requested that his execution, scheduled for May 2001. be televised to the public. His motivation may never be made clear, but it is clear that this man wanted media coverage of his own death—something that would assure him a place in history—but fortunately his request was denied.
