Not to be left out of the fashionable and burgeoning junior roadster market, BMW launched its Z3 range towards the end of 1995. The plan was certainly ambitious: to engineer a car from scratch and build it in a brand-new factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA. Yet, it definitely paid off: even before the car's official launch in October 1995, posters advertising the new James Bond film, Golden Eye, showed exactly what the secret agent's new transport was — a Z3! Within 18 months, over 40,000 had been sold worldwide.

The new BMW roadster handled beautifully and made significant use of existing bottom-of-the-range BMW components, thus keeping the price of the "poverty" variant down to below £20,000 ($35,000). Where BMW's previous sport scar model (the 1980s Z1) had seemed crisp and forward-looking, many were under whelmed by the Z3 shape, a not altogether happy mix of current BMW styling cues and half- hearted retro touches, such as the wing vents inspired by the classic 507 of the mid-50s. However, most buyers loved its sassy, over styled shape.

The Z3 was stronger in many respects than competitors like the MGF and Mazda MX-5 Miata: it had a very solid shell, excellent build quality and great presence. Frugal but uninspired four- cylinder 1.8 and 1.9-litre engines were quickly joined by a powerful 2.8-litre six-cylinder and, in the spectacular M Roadster, the M3's 321 bhp engine. This last was a real bargain super car with beefed-up styling and a special interior.
