most uncompromised machines and the most powerful Camaro too. It was also
very exclusive with a production numbering just 69. In the 1960s Chevrolet
supported the Automotive Manufacturers Association's ban by using any
engine over 400 ci (6.9 litres) only in Corvettes or large sedans. That
was until one of their employees, Vince Piggins, found a loophole in the
ban and conceived the ZL1. The car started as an SS396 model, with F41
uprated suspension, front discs, a cowl induction hood and unique engine
unlike anything Chevrolet had. It was an all-aluminum 427 ci (7.2-litre)
V8 which weighed the same as a small-block, hence the ZLl's handling remained
sharp. However, the awesome power meant the car could run 11-second quarter-miles
with racing tyres. Serious muscle-car collectors will pay up to $250,000
for a ZL1.
