engine ever in a Corvette was the LT5 V8, developed by Lotus for the limited
edition ZR1. The model began production a year prior to this model after
much hype, and looked different to regular 'Vettes because of the widened
rear bodywork which allowed the fitting of 11 x 17-inch (279 x 432mm)
alloys with 315/35 tyres. Lotus based the engine on Chevy's small-block
V8, but started with an aluminum-alloy block. Scratch-built heads used
two-cams-per-bank operating on four valves per cylinder. The induction
also had two ports and injectors per cylinder and only one of each operated
below 3,500 rpm. Above this on the throttle the other port and injector
would open up and allow the full 405 bhp (302 kW) on later models to be
unleashed. Other high-tech gadgetry included the suspension; the driver
could select Touring, Sport and Performance settings.
