at just over $5,000, the '67 Corvette Sting Ray was a performance sensation.
While in 1965 the car had been available with the 396 ci big-block Chevy,
the 427 ci (6,997 cc) took power and torque up and made the Sting Ray
a serious rival to the Shelby Cobra 427 which used Ford's big-block, though
the 'Vette was less expensive. Production was just shy of 23,000 for the
'67 model year, which could be an indication of buyers taking the handsome
split-window shape while they could get it, because the following year
the car restyled to mixed reviews. The chassis still featured Zora Arkus
Duntov's excellent independent rear suspension, but in order to cope with
the extra weight and power, the 427 also received stiffer suspension,
a heavy-duty clutch, larger radiator and fan, and dealers recommended
everyone take the four-wheel brake discs option for the obvious reason.
