The John Z. De Lorean story is quite an epic. An ex-General Motors high flyer, De Lorean touted his idea for a dramatic but high-volume sport scar around several countries, in the search for financial support. The British government took the bait, offering grants and loans totaling more than £80 million ($134 million) if De Lorean would set up shop in economically disadvantaged Northern Ireland, and he accepted.

The ingredients of the De Lorean DMC-12 should have led to success: a chassis engineered by Lotus, a body styled by Giugiaro and a V-six engine from the Peugeot/Renault factory. Nor, given that it was only for the US market, was there anything wrong with its projected price of £15,000 (US $25,000).

But somehow the reality was different. De Lorean elected to use brushed stainless steel for the bodywork, which looked novel in the showroom but attracted dirt and scratches like chalk in the real world. The gulling doors were another novelty, but they often leaked and, it was rumored, could trap the car's occupants in a crash. Furthermore, the quality of the early cars, built by an inexperienced workforce, was such that a second factory had to be opened in Los Angeles to rebuild them. Despite the effort of Lotus, the rear-mounted engine layout never delivered anything better than indifferent handling. De Lorean announced massive production targets, but only 8,583 cars were built between the car's launch in 1980 and the collapse of the DeLorean Motor Company in 1982.

Thereafter it was controversy all the way: financial irregularities came to light and John De Lorean was arrested, but cleared, on drug-trafficking charges. The De Lorean is now something of a cult car with its own following of devotees.
