| | DODGE DART GTS (1969) CAR HISTORYCar review on DODGE DART GTSDodge first introduced
the compact Dart in 1963 and, far from being a performance model, it came
that year with a six-cylinder engine only. But as the mid-60s turned to
the late-'60s the Dart developed much like the rest of the Dodge line-up,
hence it got a small-block V8 in '64, though with just 180 bhp (134 kW)
performance was brisk rather than exciting. It was certainly a long way
from the larger, hemi cars which had 425 bhp (316 kW) under their hoods.
Even so, the Dart grew in popularity and had increasingly bigger displacement
engines. By 1969 the top sport model was the GTS, which came with the
company's new 340 ci (5571 cc) small-block, firmer shocks, 'Rallye' uprated
springs, Red Tread wider tyres and bumble bee stripes over the trunk and
sides. Optional on the engine was the 'Six Pack' consisting of three two-barrel
carburettors which gave 15 bhp (11 kW) increase in power.
