Li'l Red Express Truck was Dodge's attempt at a factory custom pick-up,
and it was a very successful one. It uses the truck's standard and very
strong separate chassis with a 360 ci (5,899 cc) V8 mounted up front for
extraordinary pulling power, in fact the engine made this one of the fastest
production vehicles in Detroit in 1979. It used a police-spec build, with
high-lift camshaft, large four-barrel 850cfm, windage tray to help the
crankshaft rev free of oil, plus a high-flow air filter and chrome dress-up
items. The suspension was uprated with stiffer shocks for improved handling,
while the brakes got power assistance to help bring down the speed. While
in 1978 the truck had seen just 2,188 buyers, but the following year this
more than doubled to 5,118, with the only change that year being the quad
headlights.
