| | DUESENBERG MODEL J (1928) CAR HISTORYCar review on DUESENBERG MODEL J While Rolls Royce
garnered much praise for luxury motoring in Britain, it was Duesenberg
who were top of the pile in the USA, though their machines were recognized
and respected throughout Europe. The Model J was more than just a luxury
car, as Duesenberg intended it to be a sporting drive for keen drivers.
The engine was mighty, being a straight-eight cylinder with twin overhead
camshafts and four valves per cylinder, plus a mercury-filled crank damper
which kept it smooth running while being incredibly powerful. The suspension
was developed too and the company invented the phrase about its Duesenberg
taking curves 'as though on rails'. For those people with the money to
buy one but who got bored with the performance, there was always a supercharger
kit which could boost power up to 320 bhp (238 kW), which filmstar Gary
Cooper did to his SSJ roadster.
