There is something magical about the word Testarossa, a name that Ferrari has used since the 1950s. All it means is "redhead", and it refers to the color of the cylinder head on the engine, but the name has acquired a mythical status by association.

The 1984 Testarossa was the successor to the great Berlinetta Boxer, and duplicated much of its specification on the same chassis, but the new car was much more than a rebodied Boxer. The famous 5.0-litre flat-twelve engine was given completely revised cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder (and naturally painted red!), with the result that power rose to 390 bhp and flexibility was enhanced. Ferrari also used high-tech nickel-alloy to prevent heat damage to the valves.

While the Boxer always had front- mounted radiators, the Testarossa switched to rear-mounted cooling, just how fast you could safely pilot ahead of the rear wheels. This dictated a new styling trait in the form of extremely wide rear wings punctured by dramatic horizontal strakes, which began in the engine doors. Pininfarina was responsible for the shape of the body. It was undeniably spectacular from any angle – especially the low, wide rear - but some questioned its audacity after the classically understated Boxer.

To save weight, the bodywork was all aluminum (except the roof and doors) and Pininfarina's wind tunnel confirmed the slipperiness and inherent down-force of the shape. The trade-off of having such a wide body (it was 78in (198cm) across) was that manoeuvring the car proved difficult, and visibility was very poor. This more than anything affected the Testarossa. In other respects Ferrari's new mid- engine top-of-the-range super car was everything it should be. sounded superb, the cabin was comfortable, the controls were light and- most importantly of all - this was an extremely fast car to drive. It could do the0-60 mph (0-96 kph) sprint in 5.5 seconds and would keep on going to 180 mph (290 kph). Responses were always delicate, and the handling was rewarding.

In January 1992, the Testarossa was renamed 512 TR and revised extensively, the aim being to reclaim from Lamborghini's Diablo its title as the fastest car around. The TR name echoed the fact that this was essentially still a Testarossa, and only the new 348-style nose and larger wheels were very different.

Much more happened under the skin: more power (428 bhp), lower ride height, better gearbox and improved suspension. The cabin was heavily revised, too. In short, the 512 TR was the best - and fastest – super car in production.

The final evolution of the redhead was the F512M of 1994. This reflected Ferrari's preferred F prefix, while the M stood for "Modificata". Power went up by another 13 bhp, so that its top speed now approached 200 mph (322 kph) and 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) came up in under five seconds. Other changes included cowled headlamps, bonnet (hood) ducts, new turbine wheels, restyled interior and classic round tail lights.
