Fiat's unloved, unlovely 130 saloon of the late 60s was always a much better car than people gave it credit for, with some fine engineering under its square-rigged body. Ironically, it spawned one of the best-looking cars of the 70s, the Pininfarina-styled 130 coupe of 1971. Perfectly proportioned and superbly elegant from any angle, it stood apart from many luxury coupes of its day in having ample room inside for four. Few coupes were as sumptuous either, with rich velour on the seats, veneer door capping and high equipment levels: electric windows, twin-tone "town and country" horns and an electric aerial were all standard.

Mechanically it was identical to the saloon, the smooth, free-revving V-six recently updated from 2.8 to 3.2 liters to answer gripes about power performance. Power was a still modest 165 bhp but torque went up dramatically, and these heavy 130s always felt quicker on the road than they were against the clock. Most were autos — by Borg Warner -though there was a five-speed manual option. These cars had the sophisticated independent suspension, shared at the rear with the Fiat Dino, and fine balance as well as a supple ride worthy of a world-class luxury car. Power steering was standard.

In the end, it was the Fiat name that killed off the 130 coupe before its lime: its prestige pulling power, in a class dominated by BMW and Mercedes, was always going to be limited. Production ceased in 1977, the coupe holding on a year longer than the saloon.
Today, rust has savaged many of the 130 coupes and good ones are highly sought-after.
