In a Britain battered by war and starved of motoring excitement, it is perhaps little wonder that the Jaguar XK120, launched at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1948, was such a sensation. Conceived as a low-volume dream car rather than a serious production machine, it was destined to become a great dollar-earner for Britain (most XKs went to America) and one of the most celebrated classics of all.
The package was unbeatable. Jaguar boss William Lyons shaped a flowing two-seater roadster body that was a model of elegant purity, taking for inspiration the pre-war BMW 328 roadster. On looks alone it would have sold handsomely, but there was more: under the long, tapering bonnet was a brand-new twin-cam straight-six engine, the classic 3.4-litre XK unit that was to survive well into the 90s and power everything from Le Mans winners to tanks and fire engines. Pumping out a smooth 160 bhp on twin SU carburetors, it made sure the '120' tag was no idle boast: in fact the 120 mph (193 kph) XK was for a time the world's fastest standard production car. Later SE (Special Equipment) versions with high- lift cams and twin exhausts would hike power to 180blip. Few sport scars were as civilized as the XK with its supple suspension, though the brakes (drums. of course, but poorly cooled because of the modern all-enveloping bodywork) were never much to write home about, Jaguar were unprepared for the demand, and XK production remained tiny in 1949 as the company tooled-up for the big-volume steel-body version that came on stream in 1950.

From then on, there was no looking back. An elegant fixed-head version was announced in 1951 and a roomier drop head coupe in 1953. The XK140 of 1954 gained more power (190 bhp as standard, 210 with SE pack), bigger bumpers and - best of all - rack-and- pinion steering while retaining all three body options. If the coupe's roof line didn't improve its looks, then at least it offered rear seats for the first time.

Last of the XK line was the 1957 150, basically on the same chassis but with all new body panels: there was a voguish wrap-around front screen, a higher scuttle and more width as Jaguar tried to string out the model's appeal until the E-Type arrived in 1961. The braking problem was met with four-wheel Dunlop discs, and in the car’s triple-carburetor 3.8-liter ‘S’ form (from 1959) power soared to 265 bhp with a top speed of 135 mph (217 kph). There were 210 bhp and 250 bhp 3.4 cars, twin carburetor 3.8s, and the odd automatic, highlighting demands for more luxury, particularly from Americans. Like all XKs, the 150 was great value, half the price of the contemporary Aston DB4 and Mercedes 300SL. It was getting old, though, and Jaguar had something more exciting in the wings - the E-Type.
