A heroic last minute effort by freelance stylist William Towns, the Lagonda saloon that stole the 1976 Earls Court show looked as if it could have been beamed down from another planet: low and razor edged it was a show-stopper — and just the publicity — that back-from-the-dead Aston Martin needed.

170 deposits were taken at that show but prospective buyers weren't to know that their cars wouldn't be ready until 1979 because of problem with the high-tech electronics.

Towns' ambitious ideas for the interior with its digital dashboard and touch sensitive controls was somewhat in advance of the available technology as applied to motorcars, and in the interests of reliability, his concepts had to be watered down for production.
Somewhere along the line the price had gone up by £10,000 - to £32,0000 - by the 1979 launch date but buyers willingly coughed-up. First to lake delivery were Lord and Lady Tavistock.

Mechanically the Lagonda was well proven, essentially a stretched Aston Martin V-eight with meaty four-camshaft 5.3 liter V-eight engine. Suspension was same-again, too, but with the geometry and spring rates adjusted to cope with the extra weight, as well as self-leveling for the De Dion rear suspension. Scaling almost two tons, this was the biggest, heaviest and most opulently luxurious Lagonda since the war, nothing was left to chance in the labor-saving department, with air conditioning and electric seats all included in the price.
Pundits had nothing but praise for its ride and handling, superb for a large saloon, but some dared to suggest that it could have been quicker off-the-line, while others raised eyebrows at the lack of rear seat legroom in such a huge car. Aston tried to answer this criticism with a still-born twin turbo version, while Tickford did a trio of stretched Lagondas with twin color TVs. Never the car for the shy shrinking violet, the Lagonda then began its sad decent into the role of tacky oil-sheikh special painted white and fitted with body kits.
Towns tried to redeem his rapidly aging super saloon with a more rounded offering in 1987, but Aston messed-up his specifications and the car looked, if anything, worse.

It was too late. The dream car made flesh that had raised so many pulses back in 1976 died quietly in 1990 with 645 cars sold. There is talk of a successor but new owners Ford may decide that Aston should stick to what they do best — building Aston Martins.
