LAMBORGHINI 350GT (1964-1968) CAR HISTORY

Car review on LAMBORGHINI 350GT

Launched in March 1964, the 350GT was the first Lamborghini production car.

Its Touring body was all new and prettier than the earlier 350GTV prototype, its alloy panels stretched over a steel frame on the usual Superleggera principle. At its heart was a four-cam 60-degree V-twelve engine, its crank machined from a solid billet. Detuned to 270 bhp for the 350GT, the production engine had side-draught carburetors for a low bonnet line. Suspending the meaty round-tube chassis was a pukka coil spring and tubular wishbone suspension, with assisted Girling discs from the UK. ZF supplied the steering box and the five-speed transmission, and at the rear was a Salisbury differential. This advanced specification was schemed by rising star engineers Giampaolo Dallara and Giotto Bizzarini, laying the ground for the Lamborghinis yet to come.

Shatteringly fast, superbly smooth and very flexible, all this fine-handling 160 mph (257 kph) car lacked was matinee idol looks. Eschewing the classic, sinewy muscle tone of Pininfarina, Touring of Milan sketched a dramatic coupe for Lamborghini -memorably rounded, obviously last, definitely pleasing from some angles but, somehow, not quite right.

The initial alloy-bodied 350GT was the lightest and fastest of these early front-engined cars. Later 400GT and GT two-plus-twos were steel-bodied (the boot lid and bonnet were still alloy), with more torque and blip in order to counteract the added weight, now a corpulent 28621b (1298kg).

A four-liter engine became optional in 1965, but only 23 were built before the introduction of the steel-bodied 400GT two-plus-two in 1967.
