In Italian, "Integrate" means full, complete, whole, and that fittingly describes the abilities of Lancia's impressive Delta Intcgrale. Although it was conceived as a car to homologate for rallying, it was quickly recognized as one of the all-time great road cars.

Lancia was a consistently strong rallying contender — one has only to remember the Stratos and 037 — and it had built the mid-engine four-wheel-drive Delta S4 Group 4 car in 1984. However, after such Group B monsters were banned following major crashes and deaths (prompting the nickname "Killer B's"), all attention switched to the milder Group A category for 1987.

Lancia produced the Delta HF 4x4 all-wheel-drive car as a prelude to the full Integrate model, which was launched in October 1987, with its distinctive wide wheel-arches and fat tires. The Integrale promptly swept the board in rallying events, taking 14 World Championship rallies in 18 months and powering Miki Biasion to two world titles.

Road-car drivers quickly realized what a fabulous machine it was. The sophisticated four-wheel-drive system glued the car to the tarmac, while the 185bhp two-liter turbo engine sprinted the car across country faster than just about anything on the road. This was the fastest, safest point-to-point car in the world - and it was a practical five-door hatchback into the bargain. It felt special inside too: there were Recaro seats, electric front windows and unique instrumentation.

The Integrale just got better with age. In 1989, the old eight-valve cylinder head was upgraded to a new 16-valve head, which pushed power up to 200bhp. The main reason was to homologate the head for rallying, and it took only a few months to sell 5000 cars. The 16V cars won 13 World Championship rallies, and Kankkunen drove one to the 1991 title.

In 1991, a further evolution HF Integrale boasted even more power (210bhp - and later 215bhp - thanks to a larger exhaust), even wider wheel-arch flares to cover extended front and rear tracks, restyled grille, air intakes, bonnet, wings, bumpers and skirts, and a dramatic new adjustable tailgate spoiler. Officially, this edition was called just HF Integrale (no "Delta" in the name). It took until early 1992 to sell the requisite 5000 copies, and yet again, Lancia took the 1992 Championship for Makes, in its last year as an official works team - not bad for a car that had its roots in the 1970s.

Today the Integrale has a hallowed status among keen drivers. Although it left production in 1994, examples are avidly sought after because there really is nothing like it still in production.
