When Fiat took control of Lancia and its huge debts in 1969, many pundits guessed that there would be no more true Lancias — technically advanced cars with sporting character. They were wrong. The Pininfarina-styled Gamma saloon (sedan) and coupe announced at Geneva in 1976 boasted all the idiosyncrasies with associated Lancia.

Not the least of these quirks was the adoption of a big 2.5-litre flat-four engine in an executive class more used to six cylinders at the very least, Although the engine was torquey and smooth at high revs, it proved a difficult choice for buyers to accept, not only because it was rather throbby and unrefined at tick-over but because it rapidly acquired a reputation for serious reliability problems: overheating was common, and the cam belt could strip its teeth if the steering was put on full lock from cold.

It was a shame that the Gamma was so underdeveloped because it was a great driving machine, with superb balance and the best power steering around. The saloon was handsome in its own way, but the coupe was a classic of elegant, perfectly proportioned styling.
Series 2 models gained fuel injection, a four-speed auto option and other detail modifications to make the engine more reliable, but it all came too late and in 1984 Gamma production ended. Had the model survived it would probably have been given effective 16-valve technology and there were even turbocharged 180bhp "Fcdcralized" Gammas running as prototypes.

Pininfarina built a Spider version of the coupe in 1978, then a four-door, three-box Scala in 1980, and finally the Olgiata of 1982, a handsome estate (station wagon) version, but sadly all three remained prototypes.
