By the 1980s, the once-great name of Maserati was fading fast. Citroen had taken an interest in 1968 but sold out to De Tomaso in 1975, after which Maserati's model development stagnated and production dwindled. When a bold new model was launched in 1981, the intention was to boost Maserati production. The Biturbo certainly did that, but at the cost of permanently denting Maserati's reputation.

While the car had its faults, the main problem was that it didn't look or feel like a real Maserati. In style it was a dead-ringer for the BMW 3 Series; but for its trident grille it looked utterly anonymous.

If the Biturbo had one strength, it was the performance delivered from the twin-turbocharged multivalve V-six engine. Producing 180bhp initially, it was a very quick car if one had the patience to wait for the turbo-lag to disappear after the throttle was floored. The original 2.0-litre engine (really confected to exploit Italian tax rules) was expanded to 2.5 liters in 1983, and up to 2.8 liters in 1987, by which time power output had reached 224bhp.

Its price and badge made a quick killing for owners De Tomaso. In America especially, the Biturbo sold in very large numbers in the booming 80s. This was a quick route into sharp-suited Italian haute couture, especially in ostentatious open-top Spyder form.
Its oft-quoted shortcomings included evil handling, especially in the wet, cramped rear-seat accommodation and an interior of dubious taste, crowned as it was by a huge clock and acres of lush wood. Owners also found themselves stranded by unreliable engines and distinctly cheesed off all round by rather poor craftsmanship.

Perhaps the redeeming feature of the Biturbo was that it put Maserati back on the map. It sold well enough to re- establish a fading name, and it did give rise to a bewildering profusion of follow- up models. These included a four-door version variously called the 420/425/430, a Spyder convertible, and the second-generation 2.22 and 2.24(which lost the Biturbo label). Vastly superior were the stunningly fast Karif, Shamal and Ghibli of the 1990s, whose heritage was clearly traceable back to the first Biturbo but otherwise had almost nothing in common with it.

When Ferrari assumed overall control of Maserati in 1997, quality took a quantum leap in the right direction and the bad old days were forgotten. The Biturbo can be seen as the model that delivered Maserati safely into its new owner's hands.
