Maserati conceived the 1967 Ghibli as its ultimate late 60s road car. It might not have been as technically advanced as its rivals from Ferrari (the 275 GTB/4) and Lamborghini (the 350GT) but it was at least as beautiful, with a lean, low shape by (lie talented young designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, then working for Ghia. Even today it is one of (lie designs of which lie is most proud, and some say it is a better-looking car than the Daytona.

The performance left nothing to be desired, even though Maserati made no attempt to keep weight down with this luxurious, steel-bodied car. With the earlier type of 4.7 V-eight engine — a four-cam design closely related to a type that originated in a 300S racer in the 1950s - the Ghibli was a 150 mph (241 kph) car.

With the later 4.9-litre SS engine, the top speed went up to 165 (265), though it only produced 5 bhp more. Smooth and tractable, these engines majored on torque rather than ultimate power, with a fairly modest rev limit. The auto box option obviously cut performance considerably, but most Ghiblis had the five-speed ZF manual.

Maserati made the traditional suspension work beautifully. Cornering was flat, heavy steering precise, lightening nicely at speed. The leaf- sprung live rear axle gave the game away, however, with a jiggly ride. The brakes, big four-wheel discs, were well up to the job of stopping the portly Ghibli. To increase its appeal - especially on the American market - a Spider version of the Ghibli was launched in 1969 and is now one of the most collectable post- war Maserati road cars. Those who required four seats could buy tire Indy from 1969, a car technically almost identical to the Ghibli but with a less pleasing body by Vignale. Ghibli production faded away in 1973 as the Citroen-influenced Bora and Khamsin began to come on stream as Maserati's flagship super cars. By the standards of low-volume super cars, the Ghibli was successful, with 1,149 cars built plus a further 125 Spiders.
