The Maserati Khamsin was a front-engined super car dating from the 1972 Paris silow, although production didn't begin until 1974. Named after an Egyptian wind, it was crafted in steel by Bertone and angular and dart-like in shape, with a swoopy wedge profile and an abruptly sawn-off tail. A feature was its glazed rear panel, with the tail-lights held in suspension by the glass.

Inside, the chunky dash, with its awful nylon-covered top, lacked both the symmetry and restraint of more tasteful 60s Maseratis, but air conditioning was standard and there was an adjustable steering column and hydraulic up-down seat movement.

All Khamsins came with the classic Maserati four-cam V-eight engine, mounted well back against the bulkhead so that, with the 20-gallon (91-litre) fuel tank filled, weight distribution was an ideal 50/50. The pedigree of this all- alloy powerhouse was impeccable. It was launched in the 450s in 1956 and its first road car application was in the flagship 5000GT in 1959. Thereafter, Maserati juggled with bore and stroke ratios depending on the application, there were 4.2 and 4.7 V-eights but the Khamsin came only as a dry-sumped 4.9, red-lined at 5500rpm to make a full-bodied 320 bhp. Torque, though, was its forte: a colossal 354-lb/ft (481.4Nm) at 4000rpm. Needless to say, the Khamsin had massive low-speed lugging ability, so thickly spread is this torque across the 800-5500rpm power band.

Conceived as a successor to the Indy and Ghibli, the Khamsin differed from its 60s front-engined predecessors in having proper double-wishbone rear suspension rather than an outdated, if well located, live axle. Further, it used Citroen hydraulics for steering, brakes, clutch and the pop-up headlights and driver's seat adjustment. It was the last Maserati to feel the technical influence of French control: by the time Khamsin production was getting into its stride in1975, Citroen had pulled out.

As the last great, front-engined car to carry the Trident - a proper super car rather than a jumped-up executive saloon - the Khamsin holds a special place in the history of the marque.
