| | MAZDA COSMO (1967-1968) CAR HISTORYCar review on MAZDA COSMOWith the futuristic-looking 1967 Cosmo 110S, Mazda just piped NSU to the post as a producer of twin-rotary wankel-powered production cars. Like the Ro80, it was designed from the ground up for the new engine, taking advantage of its compact dimensions and good power-to-weight ratio. Capacity was equivalent to about two liters with an output of 110 bhp at 7000rpin. Rather than using peripheral ports for maximum power, Mazda had its inlet ports in the casing in the name of increased low-down torque, idling smoothness and fuel consumption at low speeds. In most other respects, the 110S was a conventional, stylish
luxury sports coupe pitched against the likes of the Porsche 911 and the
Jaguar E-Type. Top speed was 116 mph (186 kph) with 0-60 (96) in about 10
seconds, revving to 7000rpm in the usual smooth, vibration-free wankel
fashion. With a DeDion axle at the rear and wishbones at the front, it
had excellent handling with a rather hard ride and a good brake set-up
with discs at the front and drums at the back. The Cosmo changed little
in its six years of production, gaining a closer-ratio five-speed gearbox,
a longer wheelbase and a little more power -128 bhp - on the 1968 "B"
model. The Cosmo name lived on in a series of rather more conventional-looking
saloon-based coupes and survives to this day on Mazda's high-tech luxury
flagship. Mazda is the only company that still markets rotary engines
in production cars most famously in its best-selling RX7 sport scar.
