Mazda will go down in history as the staunch defender of Wankel's rotary engine, and as the company which finally sorted its problems out. Long after pioneer NSU had bitten the dust; Mazda pursued the rotary ideal with a whole string of models, including saloons (sedans), coupes and sports cars.

Mazda had the courage to realize the inherent strengths of the rotary engine. The design was very compact and lightweight; it could run to extremely high revs and was smoother than any other four-stroke engine. Its biggest fault was a propensity for drinking fuel.
The other original major concern was reliability. The engine depended on the integrity of the tips of the rotating triangle, which span around inside the combustion chamber. These tended to wear quickly and cause running difficulties. Modern technology finally addressed this problem (Mazda certainly had it cured during the life cycle of its RX-7) but by then the make's poor reputation was firmly established.

In later years, Mazda reserved the rotary engine for its range-topping coupes and sports cars. The RX-7 was an undoubted classic. For its day (it was launched in 1978), it was a unique blend of style and talent.

The centre of the magical RX-7 equation was the engine. Charismatic, sweet-running and powerful, there was nothing else like it. It may not have been overly fast, with a top speed of 120mph (193kph) and 0-60mph (0-96kph) in 8.6 seconds, but it was entertaining - except for a tendency to back-fire. When taken around bends there was little to fault the RX-7's enthusiasm, and in character it was pure sports car. If you wanted more performance you could take your RX-7 to a specialist like TWR, which offered a potent turbo charged conversion - and many customers did.

The RX-7's shark-nose coupe style was distinctive and, with the pop-up headlamps down, extremely clean. Although it had a pair of rear seats, they were so small that this was essentially a two-sealer. The first cars were quite starkly equipped, but gradually refinements like electric windows and a spoiler were introduced.

The second-generation RX-7 of 1986 was larger, heavier and softer, far less of a sports car and more of a boulevard cruiser (especially in soft-top form, a body style never offered on the first RX-7). By 1992, the third-generation RX-7 had catapulted Mazda back into the sports car league with a twin-turbo engine, an advanced and extremely attractive body structure and bristling performance.

Neither really duplicated the original purity of the first RX-7, which ranks as one of the most successful sports cars ever, with almost half a million of the first generation sold.
