| | MERCURY SPORTSMAN (1946) CAR HISTORYCar review on MERCURY SPORTSMAN While the Sportsman
didn't pack any new technology, nor a powerful engine (as the name suggested),
it did have a beautifully designed body and a ride quality which belied
its ancient underpinnings. The styling was brought about by Bob Gregorie,
who had to create the feel of the upmarket Lincoln Continental without
the cost, so he produced wood panelling in maple and mahogany which dovetailed
exquisitely throughout the rear of the car. As mentioned, underneath the
car had nothing revolutionary. There was a separate steel chassis with
large centre tunnel to house the torque tube (like all Mercurys of the
time), while the suspension was plain old solid axle with transverse leaf
springs at both ends. Even using the biggest Flathead V8 of the time,
the car's performance was still leisurely, though it did have good low
speed torque, and the powerplant was very reliable.
