cars demanded respect on the street. They made so much torque even in
stock form that they could chirp the tyres in all three gears as they
accelerated. But GM's self-imposed limit of 400 ci (6.5 litres) on its
cars in the 1960s meant that none could use over that amount of cubic
inches, at a time when both Ford and Chrysler was going well over that
displacement. What the owner of this hot-rodded Oldsmobile has done is
get one of the 1970 455 ci (7.4-litre) Rocket engines, which came about
as restrictions were lifted. It's the biggest and most powerful engine
Oldsmobile ever offered, and with a few special mods it makes enongh power
to push this near 2-ton car to 13-second quarter miles. The rest of the
car is pretty much how Oldsmobile intended, with uprated anti-roll bars
and stiffer springs for improved handling. Special features include a
1970 Oldsmobile dash.
