| | PEGASO Z102 AND Z103 (1951-1958) CAR HISTORYCar review on PEGASO Z102 AND Z103The Spanish company Pegaso's main commercial concern has always been trucks and motor coaches, but for a brief period in the 50s it was also noted for its cars, perhaps the most glamorous and certainly among the fastest of their day. They combined racing-car design and engineering with exotic Italian styling, but only 100 cars were produced - some say only 84.
Pegaso constantly meddled with the specification of the car: the 2.8-litre engine came with single and multi-choke carburetors (giving between 175 and 190 bhp), and later there was a 3.2-litre option with twin four-barrel carbs and 230 bhp. A supercharged version of the 2.8 gave up to 280 bhp, and there was even a 3.2-litre version with 360 bhp. The performance was fantastic, with up to 160 mph (257 kph) in its most powerful form and an amazing noise generated by its gear-driven camshafts. They were heavy, brutish cars to drive, and despite their good handling and power they never found much competition success. The cars were always built on a cost- no-object basis, and
the Z103 was a last- ditch effort to make them more commercially successful,
using simpler single overhead-camshaft V-eight engines with 3.9, 4.5 and
4.9-litre capacities. Pegaso built its last sports cars in1958. They never
made any money for the company but at least they proved they could do
it and complete with the best in the world.
