The Volkswagen Golf may have started the hot-hatch craze in the 1970s, but it was Peugeot that made the best of the breed in the 80s. Its 205GTI became a performance car legend, for it stood head-and-shoulders above the competition, right up until its death.

It started from a wonderful basis: the Pininfarina-dcsigned 205 was a very competent little hatchback. Its combination of a pleasing shape, supple ride and outstanding handling made it one of the most popular cars of its time — and it was still in production after 14 years. However, it cried out to have more power, and so tile GTI was born in 1984. Crisp, agile and offering more grip I around corners than anyone had a right to expect from a car costing so little, the 205GTI was an instant hit.

Perhaps the power output of the first 1.6-litre engine was too low: 105bhpwas less than rivals such as the Opel Astra GT/E and VW Golf GTI. Peugeot offered a Sport kit to boost power by 20bhp, hut plainly the standard GTI needed to keep pace, and within two years Peugeot had upped the output of the 1.6-litre engine to 1 151)lip, and at the same time an even more powerful 130bhp 1.9-litre model was added. This larger engine version with its bigger alloy wheels proved to him the definitive GTI.

Inside, rally-style scats hugged the passengers and a tasteful arrangement of black, red and grey upholstery was standard. Instrumentation was complete and equipment generous. There wasn't much to criticize. The hard suspension gave an uncomfortable ride but this improved with successive tweaks. Build quality was a consistent problem, too, but probably the worst foible was on-the-limit handling. Although it took a lot to get a 205GTI out of shape around corners, when you did (by lifting off the throttle in mid-corner for instance), it was all rather a handful.

Another GTI variant was the 1986 CTI, the convertible version, which was | partly built by Pininfarina. Most were made with 1.6-litre 115bhp engines, but eventually Peugeot succumbed and fitted the 130bhp 1.9 unit for another cracking car.

When the 205GTI retired in 1994, there was no direct successor. The 306 was a much larger car, which, initially at least, had none of the GTI's performance and agility. Eventually, hot versions of the 306 and smaller 106 came along to fill the gap: the 306 S16 and GTi-6 were stormingly powerful hot hatches in the best traditions, while the 106GTI was possibly the most entertaining performance hatchback being made when it arrived in 1997.

By this stage, however, the heyday of the GTI had already passed. And in the 1980s, when it really was all the rage, the little Peugeot 205GTI was undoubtedly king of the breed.
