getting out of reach financially to many people, so Chrysler brought in
a new entry-level model. The Duster combined their 340 ci (5.6-litre)
small-block engine with a lightweight, two-door version of the Valiant
body. The result, though regarded as a budget racer, could easily give
trouble to bigger-engined cars. Chrysler's torsion bar front suspension
was used, and leaf springs out back held the live axle in place, the latter
coming with 3.23:1 gears and the option of a Sure Grip differential. The
stock gearbox was a three-speed manual, though a four-speed was on the
option list, as was the Torqueflite three-speed automatic. Externally
the car looked best with the optional matt black hood with '340 Wedge'
graphic. Inside, the Duster had a very simple interior with a bench seat
and multi-dial dash, with optional steering-column mounted rev counter.
