| | PLYMOUTH FURY (1958) CAR HISTORYCar review on PLYMOUTH FURY The 'Fury' name
couldn't have been more apt with the launch of the 1958 two-door from
Plymouth. While it looked like a car that had more style than substance,
it was quicker than most from Detroit. Furys had always received Chrysler's
biggest engines, since their launch in 1956, and the 1957 cars' 318 ci
(5.2-litre) engine disappeared after a year to be replaced by a more potent
350 ci (5.7-litre) V8. The Fury deserved its reputation for being the
best-handling car in its class too, which was down to Chrysler's new-for-1957
'Torsion Air Ride' suspension which had longitudinal torsion bar springs
up front. The design was so good it lasted through until 1980 in the Volaire.
The car also handled well thanks to a low centre of gravity, possibly
due to the low stance. Styling was typical for the era, with tall fins,
wraparound front and rear windshields and pillarless side windows.
