400 ci (6.6-litre) engine provided so much torque that the car could overpower
the rear tyres with the slightest blip of the throttle, even with the
Safe-T-Track limited-slip differential. For 1968 the GTO, having been
out since 1964 as a high-performance option, had a new body style which
improved looks while retaining an aggressive look and the trademark Pontiac
split grille. It was also slighter shorter in the wheelbase than its predecessor,
but kept the separate chassis and body. At the front it used unequal-length
A-arms, while the live rear axle used trailing arms and coil springs with
separate shocks. Three versions of the engine were available in 1968,
the base having 350 bhp (261 kW), the second featuring a higher lift cam
and 360 bhp (268 kW), and the third the Ram Air II option with improved
heads and hood cold-air feed, giving 366 bhp (273 kW).
