of the other manufacturers holding onto the muscle era as long as they
possibly could before the fuel-conscious early 1970s took over. The GTO
name had started when John DeLorean installed a 389 ci (6.3-litre) big-block
into Pontiac's intermediate Tempest sedan, and the car reached its peak
in 1969, but wasn't about to got out without a bang come 1971. The car
got a slight restyle around the nose section with a more protruding grilled
surround, and used large vents at the front of the hood for the Ram Air
intake. The car changed little in the suspension department except for
revalved shocks, but wider alloy wheels at 7 x 14 inches (178x356mm) helped
the handling. The interior had individual bucket seats and optional was
a hood-mounted rev counter. The new engine was the 455 ci (7.4-litre),
which lost power through low compression to comply with emissions.
