The idea of a car created specially to compete in rallies was Renault's. The 5 Turbo, introduced in 1978, spawned a string of copycat homologation specials like the Lancia S4 and Ford RS200, all sold for road use as well; because the rules stated that a minimum number had to be built. As a pioneer, the Renault was also the only rally car which made complete sense as a road car.

In fact, an impressive tally of nearly 5,000 RENAULT 5 TURBOs were built because of customer demand. It's easy to appreciate why. The 5 Turbo had a centrally mounted turbo intercooler engine, which offered scorching acceleration, massive grip and endless handling entertainment.

Very little of the shopping (standard) Renault 5 (Le Car in the US) remained. Renault's Alpine factory bolted on wildly flared wheel-arches, gaping cooling vents and big spoilers, and the doors, roof and tailgate of the first cars were in aluminum. The interior was atypically French mix of bold primary colors and avant-garde designs.

Mechanically, the story was even more divergent. Racing suspension, big brakes and hugely fat tires complemented the heavily heat-shielded engine (which sat just inches from your ears, inside the cockpit). From 1983, there was a Turbo 2 version with minor trim changes, a recognizably Renault 5-derived interior and a heavier all-steel body; in contrast to the first edition (of which 1,830 were built), some 3,167 Turbo 2s were sold.
