Other car manufacturers can lay claim to having invented the people carrier, otherwise known as the Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV), but Renault was the first to produce an MPV specifically created from the ground up as such and make it popular. It revolutionized the car market and the repercussions of its success are still being felt, with every major manufacturer producing a rival.

The origins of the Espace actually began with the French sports car constructor and aerospace leader Matra. In the late 1970s, it was allied to Simca-Talbot and produced a proposal based on the Horizon for a radical "one-box" people carrier. But Matra was sold on to Renault and with it went the MPV project. Renault immediately recognized its potential and brought its new Espace to production in 1984, the same year as Chrysler Corporation's minivans.

The first and most striking feature was the shape, an exceptionally neat and integrated design with a long, steeply raked windscreen. In construction it was equally different: a steel-skeleton frame clothed with plastic panels.

The single most significant factor in the Espace equation was its interior. The fact that it was spacious, airy and cleanly designed was secondary lo its tremendous adaptability. There were three rows of seats for up to seven passengers in all, and each of these seats could be removed to increase luggage space. The front seats could swivel round to face the others, and the central one could fold to make a table. Picnic-goers and mobile office workers were happy and Renault never looked back, dominating the European MPV market with successive Espace cars.
