Car review on RENAULT TWINGO

One of the first things that Renault's new design chief Patrick Le Quement did when he joined the firm was to let it be known that Renault would be taking the lead in design terms, producing the best innovative new cars. The Twingo was the perfect expression of this ideal.

Le Quement skilfully extended the idea of the "one-box" design pioneered by Renault's Espace to the smallest car in the range. The line from the front bumper to the top of the windscreen was one elegant curve, broken only by the characterful hooded headlamps and bonnet (hood) cooling vents.

The hatchback Twingo may have looked cute from the outside but its cabin was its best feature. The digital instruments were sited in a pod in the centre of the dash, and all the switchgear was in contrasting colors and a tactile material. There was a huge amount of space, made all the more practical by the four individually reclining and sliding seats. Optional extras included a full sliding sunroof and air-conditioning.

Considering the avant-garde look of the Twingo, it was mildly disappointing to find old-world mechanicals underneath, taken directly from the antiquated Renault 5. The engine was harsh and the road behavior nothing special. It took until 1996 for Renault to fit a modern engine in the form of a brand-new 1149cc unit with more power and extra zing. An automatic version dubbed Easy was launched at the same time.

The Twingo rose to become the best-selling car in France as buyers rushed to share in its chic, and a whole culture seemed to spring up around it. The millionth example was built in 1997.
