If the boxy shape of the 1965 Silver Shadow was something of a shock for Rolls-Royce traditionalists after the flowing lines of the Cloud, there were much more revolutionary changes under the skin: all-independent self-leveling suspension, disc brakes and a monocoque structure came as powerful retort to critics who accused Crewe of falling behind the times. In one fell swoop Rolls-Royce had entered the modern era.

Built by Pressed Steel at Oxford, the main body shell was steel while doors, bonnet and boot lid were aluminum. The all-round independent suspension by coil springs with wishbones at the front and single trailing arms at the back had hydraulic height control at both ends, a system supplied by Citroen. At last disc brakes all round replaced the big drums used on the Cloud.

The 6.2-litre V-eight engine and GM Hydromantic four-speed automatic gearbox - made under license by Rolls - were standard and carried over almost unchanged from the outgoing Silver Cloud. With a 115 mph (185 kph) top speed, a 0-60 mph (96 kph) time of 10.9 seconds and a standing quarter-mile covered in 17.6 seconds, the Shadow was a fast car. Fuel consumption was good by Rolls standards, indulgent by everyone else's: between 12 and 15mpg on a run. There was, as usual, a Bentley version of the new car, called the T- Series or, retrospectively, the T1. The differences, however, were limited to a 'B'-winged radiator grille, badges and small items of trim. With the advent of the monocoque range, Bentley sales fell dramatically — only eight per cent of the Shadow 1/11 cars were Bentleys, compared with 40 per cent 01 the previous Cloud/S-Series cars.

Changes came slowly until the engine was enlarged to 6.75 liters in 1970: three-speed torque converter transmission replaced the four-speed fluid flywheel transmission in 1968; 1969 saw a long-wheelbase version of both cars, while air conditioning and a safer American-style dashboard came as standard. The Shadow II models of the mid 70s had rack steering to tighten up the soggy handling, rubber bumpers and an air-dam, plus Crewe's impressive split-level air-conditioning system.

Because there was no separate chassis, coach-built versions weren't possible. However, Roll’s subsidiary, Mulliner Park Ward, announced the Silver Shadow coupe in 1966 and a year later a convertible. Both were built at MPW's north London factory and adopted "Coke bottle" shapes for waistlines to look more handmade. Both were renamed Corniche in 1971. There were even a few two-door Shadow saloons, specially made by coachbuilder James Young.

Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow and Bentley T-Series cars were made in much larger numbers than any previous models: by the time they were replaced by the Shadow II/T2 cars in 1977, 20,000 of all types had been built. Today's Silver Spirit uses much of the technology pioneered on the Shadow.
