With the P6 saloon (sedan) car range Rover had scored an undoubted winner, as European journalists recognized when they awarded it the very first Car of the Year award. Its successor, the so-called SD1, won it again in 1977.

For a Rover, the new SD1 3500 was pretty radical. Gone were all traces of chrome and all wood dashboards, which were seemingly permanent fixtures on Rover's past. Gone was the traditional, sober saloon layout in favor of a hatchback. And the interior (with its separate "box of instruments") was anything but conservative.

The architect of the SD1 shape was Rover's David Bache, and he had the probity to acknowledge the Ferran Daytona as a direct influence: the prominent mid-riff indentation and narrow headlamps were unmistakable. As a result, the 3500 looked distinctly sleek for 1976.

As launched, the 3500 had Rover's familiar V-eight engine. In oilier respects it was a mixture of old and new: the live rear axle and drum brakes were hardly ground-breaking, but the MacPherson strut front suspension sharpened up the handling considerably. Less powerful 2000, 2300 and 2600 six-cylinder versions followed.

The best model of all was the 1982 Vitesse with its 190bhp fuel-injection engine, lowered suspension, spooked alloy wheels and tailgate spoiler. Although it was rare (less than 4,000 were built), the Vitesse added a true performance edge to the SD1 range, which was replaced in 1986.
