Shelby, in his search for an ideal race car, chose British racer John
Cooper's mid-engined design and shoehorned in an American V8. The chassis
was rigid yet lightweight, being tubular steel and with the engine and
transmission forming part of the structure. Double A-arms, anti-roll bars
and disc brakes sat fore and aft, and the aluminum body was hand-formed.
The engine was race tuned and a hill balancing and blueprinting job made
sure it was durable and reliable. The compression was raised to 10.5:1
for a power increase, and four twin Weber carburettors gave great response
and acceleration, even from low rpm. In the space of two racing seasons,
only 12 cars were constructed and just three of those are still around,
hence they're incredibly valuable - a sort of car collectors' version
of the Holy Grail.
