| | SHELBY GT 350 (1968) CAR HISTORYCar review on SHELBY GT 350 While the original
Shelby Mustangs of 1965 and 1966 had been fast and furious machines designed
for the committed driver, by 1968 they'd been tamed somewhat and were
more refined. However, performance was still the key, and in an effort
to pep up the GT 350, Shelby offered a Paxton centrifugal supercharger
to its 302 ci (4,949 cc) V8, which gave exceptional power across the rev
range. The car used the same double wishbone suspension up front and live
axle rear with leaf springs as regular Mustangs, but with stiffer spring
and shock rates to improve the handling. The brakes had optional 11.4-inch
(290 mm) front discs which the supercharged version really cried out for.
Externally the car had a restyle with 1965 Thunderbird rear lights, a
new grille, and wide Shelby alloys. Just 1,657 cars were made, and in
1968 Ford took over the Shelby operation.
