the Shelby GT500 went overboard when it joined the GT350 in production
in 1967. It was a sales success, outselling the smaller-engined model
two to one. Based on the standard Mach 1 Mustang, it differed visually
with a new grille, different tail lights, Shelby stripes and square tailpipes.
Like the Mach 1, the Shelby used the 428 Cobra jet big-block V8 engine,
but it had massive handling improvements. Heavy-duty springs and shocks,
wider tyres, thicker anti-roll bars and a roll cage to stiffen the shell
gave the Shelby great balance. The exclusivity cost though, at three times
the price of Ford's regular Mach 1. Although the factory rated the Cobra
Jet motor at 335 bhp (250 kW) to appease insurance companies who were
charging $ 1000 to insure young males, the ontput was actually closer
to 400 bhp (298 kW).
