Hawk, like its Studebaker sister models the Sky Hawk and Flight J. Hawk,
was based on the original 1953 Starlight body, and so retained its single-piece
rear window as opposed to the '52 model's four-piece panoramic item. The
'56 Golden Hawk could be identified by its small upright glass-fibre fins
on the top of the rear fenders and, being a top model, it shared the glitzy
President Classic's wide grooved horizontal aluminum trim mouldings above
the rocker panels. It was the most powerful of all Studebakers this year
by some margin, so featured power brakes and 7-inch (178 mm) wide tyres
to make full use of the V8's torque. The car came as a two-door hardtop
coupe only to e mphasis its sporting nature, but came only with the Twin
Drive automatic gearbox from Packard, who'd been in control since '53.
In 1957 the Golden Hawk was supercharged and made over 300 bhp (223 kW).
