If Cappuccino means a hot frothy coffee brew that gives you a lift when you need it, then Suzuki's car truly lived up to the name. The little Cappuccino sports car began life as a show car in 1989, intended to show what could be done within Japan's "K" class mini-car regulations.

The reaction was so good that Suzuki went into production in early 1992 at the very limited rate of 200 per month. It was a car dedicated to the eccentric Japanese market, but there were still some exports to certain markets such as the UK.
The Cappuccino may have been a tiny car-just 130 inch (330cm) long and 55ins (140cm) wide — but it was big on character. The rounded curves were reminiscent of the Austin-Healey Frogeye Sprite. The tail was cut off so that you could almost stretch out a hand from the cockpit and touch the rear bumper.

The Cappuccino's piece de resistance was its ingenious three-piece folding hardtop roof, which could be put into no less than five positions: fully enclosed; with one targa panel removed, both removed for "T"-bar motoring; all roof panels out but the rear-window section in place, or with the rear part folded down for the complete open-air treatment.

Considering its 658cc three-cylinder engine, this was a surprisingly rapid little machine: if you removed the87mph (140kph) top-speed limited, it was capable of reaching 110 mph (177kph) and sprinting from 0-60mph (0-96kph) in about nine seconds. It also handled incredibly well, sounded great and was amazing fun, all for a price that embarrassed any other sports car.
