Launched in 1962, the Triu mph TR4 was the first "pretty" TR sports car, with a roomier Michelotti body and a smattering of creature comforts. Under the skin, though, it retained all the solid, proven qualities of the 2 and 3. It had a big-banger 2.2-litre wet-liner four, giving 100 bhp (and ample torque), and the reassurance of a simple, solid rear axle for predictable handling, improved on the 102 mph (163 kph) TR4 by wider wheel tracks and rack-and-pinion steering. An all-synchromesh gearbox was another innovation.

Inside the car, the cockpit was roomier and occupants enjoyed face-level ventilation. The TR4 featured an early form of the Targa roof, later adopted by Porsche on the 911, with a removable panel (Surrey top in Triu mph parlance), and had wind-up side windows. The TR4 answered criticisms of poor road holding and a rough ride on the early TR4 with a new independent rear suspension system, a semi-trailing link system first seen on the Triu mph 2000 saloon.

Calls for more and smoother power were answered in 1967 by the TR5 with a 2498cc six-cylinder engine. Boasting the notoriously troublesome mechanical Lucas fuel-injection system, this 150 bhp car was capable of 120 mph (193 kph). It was a short-lived variant, supplanted 15months later by the TR6. Mechanically, little was changed, but the TR6 had a crisper, more modern body courtesy of Karmann of Germany. The TR line had traditionally enjoyed a strong following in the USA and so it was with the TR6 which continued in that market until 1976 in detuned carburetor form.

By that time the controversial wedge-little was changed, but the TR6 had alike TR7 was getting into its stride. Never as well loved by enthusiasts as its rugged forefathers, it was the last and numerically most successful, TR of all.
