Born into a grim post-Second World War world starved of new cars, the six-cylinder WOLSELEY 6/80 6/80 - and its four-cylinder sister the 4/50 - headed the Nuffield range for 1948.

Based on the M/0 Series Morris saloons, the basic monocoque hull looked like an overgrown Morris Minor (basically what it was), but in 6/80 form it shared the 13in (33cm) longer wheelbase of the Morris Six. A bold grille and twin spotlights gave it a more up-market image. The 6/80 shared its straight-six overhead-cams engine with the Morris Six, at 72bhp a heady six horsepower stronger than the Morris.

Its best feature was its interior, with leather seals, wooden dashboard and the rare luxury of a heater as standard equipment. Less impressive was the steering, a Bishop cam system which was both vague and heavy and no doubt somewhat off-putting in a car that was actually quite powerful for its day: the 6/80 could pull 85mph (137kph) easily.

It was the performance of the big WOLSELEY 6/80 that attracted police forces all over Britain in the late 40s and early 50s — even today the model is synonymous with 50s law enforcement. If you watch late-night TV, the cars are hard to miss, with bumper-mounted bells ringing and a tense driver battling with the car's wayward handling.

By the end of the decade, the 6/80 was struggling to keep pace with the new breed of Jaguar-driving criminals, though remarkably, with production having ended in 1954, the last cars were still in use in 1961.
